Most of India鈥檚 120 million farmers depend on rain from monsoons for a good harvest. India typically has two monsoons: one from June to September, and another from October to December. But with more planet-warming gases in the air, the rain now only loosely follows this pattern. Farming has become precarious with climate change making the season increasingly erratic. A good monsoon can noticeably boost India's economy, making it a vital weather phenomenon. Experts say adapting to changing rainfall patterns, growing climate-resilient crops, having more localized weather predictions and preparing for extreme rain and droughts can help Indians make the most of the monsoons.

The former CEO of a publicly traded health care company based in Nevada has been found guilty of a multimillion-dollar insider trading scheme. A federal jury in Los Angeles convicted Terren Scott Peizer on Friday. The Justice Department says it's the first case it has prosecuted exclusively based on a special trading plan that lets company insiders create a predetermined plan to sell shares while also setting limits on certain trading practices. Authorities say Peizer violated some of those limits when he set up plans in 2021 to sell shares of Ontrak, after learning the company's largest customer was terminating its contract. One of Peizer鈥檚 lawyers says they will appeal.

The head of the Homeland Security Department says the agency tasked with responding to disasters across the country is prepared as it goes into what is expected to be an intense hurricane and wildfire season. But Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told The Associated Press that he's concerned about looming budget shortfalls. Mayorkas was visiting the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday for a briefing about the hurricane season, which started on June 1. Experts think this year could be one of the busiest on record. As parts of the U.S. swelter, Mayorkas said extreme heat could qualify as a major disaster but that local communities historically have been able to deal with major heat waves without needing federal financial assistance.

Lawyers for Donald Trump are arguing that the Justice Department prosecutor who charged the former president with hoarding classified documents at his Florida estate was illegally appointed and that the case should therefore be dismissed. The longshot argument over the legality of special counsel Jack Smith鈥檚 appointment kicked off a three-day hearing that is set to continue next week and bring further delays to a criminal case that had been scheduled for trial last month but has been snarled by a pileup of unresolved legal disputes. The motion questioning Smith鈥檚 selection is one of multiple challenges to the indictment the defense has raised, so far unsuccessfully, in the year since the charges were brought.

The Food and Drug Administration has authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers. The decision gives new credibility to vaping companies鈥 longstanding argument that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking. Attorneys for migrant children who arrived to the United States on their own say the Biden administration鈥檚 new rules are not enough to ensure their safety while they are in U.S. custody and should not replace a decades-old agreement that requires court oversight. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee heard the arguments at a hearing in Los Angeles on Friday to consider Biden鈥檚 request to partially lift that agreement. The government says the new rules would better serve the children. The 1997 landmark settlement was named for Jenny Flores, a child immigrant from El Salvador.

The leaders of a conservative California county that tried to hand-count ballots in response to unfounded claims of fraud have hired a new registrar of voters with no experience running elections. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 on Wednesday to give the job to attorney Tom Toller, a former prosecutor who told the board he supports hand-counting ballots. Experts say hand counting is an unrealistic task given the tens of thousands of ballots returned in a countywide election that includes dozens of races. Toller indicated he would support a lawsuit seeking to overturn the state鈥檚 ban on hand-counting ballots, should the county decide to file one.
